I'm trying to read more books this year and I don't wanna forget about them; blogging will probably help me remember, but who can be sure. Last week, I finished reading Hunter S. These were my first ventures into Thompson's novels; I had read a couple of his better-known articles in my final journalism course at UF, which was all about magazine feature writing.

Fear and loathing among the movers and shakers of America's publishing industry have reached new heights with both Random House and Macmillan denouncing the literary agent Andrew Wylie's move into digital publishing. The initiative has been set up to sell ebook editions of modern classics — including Lolita, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and Updike's Rabbit tetralogy — exclusively via Amazon's Kindle store, leaving conventional publishers out of the picture. The move provoked an immediate reaction from Random House, which publishes in print several of the authors involved with Odyssey Editions. The publisher fired off a letter to Amazon "disputing their rights to legally sell these titles", which it said were "subject to active Random House publishing agreements". It went further, threatening that "on a worldwide basis", it "will not be entering into any new English-language business agreements with the Wylie Agency until this situation is resolved".

    This is the first time any of the titles--which include Norman Mailer's "The Naked and the Dead," Philip Roth's "Portnoy's Complaint" and Ralph Ellison's "Invisible Man"--have been available electronically, and all of the books are exclusive to the Kindle Store for two years.
