Choose and book advice and guidance
NHS e-Referral Service - NHS DigitalChoose and Book is a national service that combines electronic booking and a choice of place, date and time for first hospital or clinic appointments. It allows patients to choose their initial hospital or clinic appointment, and book it on the spot in the surgery or later on the phone or via the internet. Use Choose and Book. When a patient and their GP agree that they need an appointment with a specialist, Choose and Book shows their GP which hospitals or clinics are available for their treatment. Their GP discusses with them the clinically appropriate options which are available for treating their medical condition. If a patient knows where and when they would like to be seen, they may be able to book their appointment before they leave the surgery.
NHS e-Referral Service
NHS England today clarified the future of its Choose and Book programme, following an article in the Observer newspaper at the weekend. Beverley Bryant, Director of Strategic Systems and Technology for NHS England explained the contract on Choose and Book — introduced in as a national electronic appointment booking service that provides patients with a choice of place, date and time for first outpatient appointments — is coming to an end. But we know that Choose and Book has worked for some and not for others and a combination of electronic and paper referrals is still being used in some areas. Managing a mixed economy of paper and electronic referrals is onerous for hospitals and the lack of total slot availability makes it difficult for referring GPs to move away from paper. The announcement kicked off an extensive engagement with healthcare professionals and patients. Feedback from consultations has helped drive the design of the new service and help develop a system that is simpler to use, adopts the latest technology and provides an improved service for users and better experience for patients, with a view to driving up utilisation.
It was as follows:. Why are the results so much better? A GP calling Consultant Connect waits less than 1 minute to be connected to a consultant and then spends an average of 4 minutes discussing the patient. And GPs are using it too — after only 2 months it is well on its way to our projection of 50 calls per month per specialty in this area. The happy accident is that, by making it easier for the GP, the patient avoids an unnecessary trip to hospital, the hospital manages its demand and the NHS saves money.
