Rate this book. Buy This Book. Vikas Swarup's spectacular debut novel opens in a jail cell in Mumbai, India, where Ram Mohammad Thomas is being held after correctly answering all twelve questions on India's biggest quiz show, Who Will Win a Billion? It is hard to believe that a poor orphan who has never read a newspaper or gone to school could win such a contest. But through a series of exhilarating tales Ram explains to his lawyer how episodes in his life gave him the answer to each question. Ram takes us on an amazing review of his own history -- from the day he was found as a baby in the clothes donation box of a Delhi church to his employment by a faded Bollywood star to his adventure with a security-crazed Australian army colonel to his career as an overly creative tour guide at the Taj Mahal.

Q&A (Slumdog Millionaire)

Share on:. If you've seen the film or even heard of it, and who hasn't, you'd be forgiven for thinking that the book is also a love story. It isn't. And although it does have love in it, it is primarily a story of survival of the underdog. The novel is set in India and the protagonist's name, Ram Mohammed Thomas, encapsulates three of the main religions of India, Hinduism, Islam and Christianity, thereby setting him up as an Everyman figure. He wins the Indian version of the quiz, Who wants to be a Millionaire , and is promptly arrested because it is not possible for a poor street kid to know the answers to all the questions unless he was cheating, right?

Published in , it was the author's first novel. Set in India , it tells the rags to riches story of Ram Mohammad Thomas, a young waiter who becomes the biggest quiz show winner in history, only to be sent to jail on accusations that he cheated. Over the course of the novel, Ram Mohammed Thomas gives flashbacks of his life to explain to the police how he knew the answers to the show's questions - including the corruption he was faced with and had to overcome. The book is about destiny vs luck, and personal dedication. In , the book was loosely adapted into the multiple Oscar -winning movie Slumdog Millionaire , which features a new main character named Jamal and his brother Salim. The movie is a comment on how poverty and corruption poison the human spirit, and how to retain one's true self in the face of adversity. The idea behind the story line was triggered by a report in a local newspaper about children living in the Indian slums using mobile phones and the internet - an indication that class barriers were breaking down.

Shortly before his wedding, the unnamed hero of this uncommon romance is visited by a man who claims to be his future self and ominously admonishes him that he must not marry the love of his life, Q. At first the protagonist doubts this stranger, but in time he becomes convinced of the authenticity of the warning and leaves his fiancee. The resulting void in his life is impossible to fill. One after the other, future selves arrive urging him to marry someone else, divorce, attend law school, leave law school, travel, join a running club, stop running, study the guitar, the cello, Proust, Buddhism, and opera, and eliminate gluten from his diet. The only constants in this madcap quest for personal improvement are his love for his New York City home and for the irresistible Q. A unique literary talent, Evan Mandery turns the classic story of transcendent love on its head, with an ending that will melt even the darkest heart.
