Coco vs. The Book of Life - Geeks + Gamers

There's a phenomenon in Hollywood where two extremely similar movies are released in the same year, or otherwise relatively close together, by separate studios seeming without knowledge of each other - these are called twin films. However, the gods of the afterlife - La Muerte Kate del Castillo of the Land of the Remembered and Xibalba Ron Perlman of the Land of the Forgotten - interfere and Manolo is sent on a journey through the afterlife in order to return to his beloved. In terms of their development, Coco director Lee Unkrich reportedly first pitched the concept in around the time Toy Story 3 came out. Gutierrez toying with the idea as early as So, The Book of Life was undoubtedly being developed long before Coco. Undoubtedly, they would have kept their respective films under wraps until they were ready to reveal details in a public fashion. Coco vs. The Book of Life

I will start by summarizing the story of each movie, then I will list the similarities and the differences, then I will compare specifically their representation of the Day of the Dead and their use of music. For the record, I love both films to death ah! And the artists who worked on both of these films are truly extraordinary. Coco was made by Pixar and released in The gods La Muerte and Xibalba make a bet about which boy will marry Maria. Before we begin…

Seriously, how did any of them think that was going to go well? On Dia de Muertos, gods La Muerte and Xibalba make a bet that will change the course of history and the lives of three kids. Maria is sent away to a convent by her father in the hopes of her becoming a proper lady. Years pass and Manolo has become a reluctant and not very good matador. Meanwhile, Joaquin has become a town hero like his father before him. Both men vie for the affection of the returning Maria, much to her chagrin.

However, as an avid fan of all things animated, I was very happy with this movie when it came out in as The Book of Life , produced by Guillermo del Toro and directed by Jorge Gutierrez. But the similarities have made a lot of people wonder. The Book of Life was a good and quirky film. Plus: it was great to see an animated film with an Hispanic director and producer get a big budget and a major studio behind it. It became an underground hit, even though it wasn't a box office slam. In the end, it became more of a home video hit. However, the majority of the negative reviews draw parallels to The Book of Life.
