Mapp & Lucia Series

Subtly brilliant comedy of social rivalry between the wars. Emmeline Lucas known universally to her friends as Lucia is an arch-snob of the highest order. Ostensibly the most civil and genteel of society ladies, there is no plan too devious, no plot too cunning, no depths to which they would not sink, in order to win the battle for social supremacy. Using as their deadly weapons garden parties, bridge evenings and charming teas, the two combatants strive to outcharm each other - and the whole of Tilling society - as they vie for the position of doyenne of the town. What can I say? I know that I have mentioned more than once! These two women vie for the highest social ranking of the village, and all of that is done with outward smiles and nods of the head. To our great fortune, Great Britain gave us this wonderful television series back in … Mapp and Lucia, Series 1. The series takes place in the late s, in a small village, where there can only be one lady supreme.

Having made that disclaimer and confessed my ignorance, I have to say I love watching this BBC version even if only on my iPad in bed late at night. Having read other reviews, I am now inspired to read the novels and time permitting dig out the 80s TV adaptation.

By Kat Brown. Benson wrote a further three novels about their battle for social supremacy in the town of Tilling based on Benson's own home town, Rye , and these have been followed by five volumes by other writers, and now a new BBC television adaptation with Miranda Richardson and Anna Chancellor. It was, and remains, a match made in heaven: albeit a heaven of intense social oneupmanship that frequently risks breaking out into warfare, which starts when Miss Mapp leases Lucia her house for the summer. Extremely polite and waspish battle ensues, and with it, some of the choicest battle cries in literature — chiefly from Lucia, clearly Benson's favourite. First adapted for television by Channel 4 in , the town of Tilling returns with Richardson and Chancellor respectively taking on the roles originally played by Prunella Scales and Geraldine McEwan.

Mapp and Lucia is a collective name for a series of novels by E. Benson , and also the name for two British television adaptations based on those novels. The novels feature humorous incidents in the lives of mainly upper-middle-class British characters in the s and s, many of whom do not work for a living, who vie for social prestige and one-upmanship in an atmosphere of extreme cultural snobbery. Several of them are set in the small seaside town of Tilling , closely based on Rye, East Sussex , where Benson lived for a number of years and like Lucia served as mayor. The house had previously been the residence of Henry James and had a garden room overlooking the street.
