What's it about? Sign in. A frustrated circus magician from Kansas is transported to a magical land called Oz, where he will have to fulfill a prophecy to become the king, and release the land from the Wicked Witches using his great but fake powers. Oscar Diggs James Franco , a small-time circus magician with dubious ethics, is hurled away from dusty Kansas to the vibrant Land of Oz. At first he thinks he's hit the jackpot-fame and fortune are his for the taking. That all changes, however, when he meets three witches, Theodora Mila Kunis , Evanora Rachel Weisz , and Glinda Michelle Williams , who are not convinced he is the great wizard everyone's been expecting. Reluctantly drawn into the epic problems facing the Land of Oz and its inhabitants, Oscar must find out who is good and who is evil before it is too late. Putting his magical arts to use through illusion, ingenuity-and even a bit of wizardry-Oscar transforms himself not only into the great and powerful Wizard of Oz but into a better man as well.

When it comes to adapting the wonderful world of Oz, Hollywood is, admittedly and regrettably, in a bit of a bind. Frank Baum's mythology is treading on the memories of millions of fans. The film is such a massive piece of film iconography that it has become the definitive version of this tale, and outstripped the Baum book itself. The outcry — "How dare you remake The Wizard of Oz! Yet Baum's Oz mythology didn't begin and end with Dorothy. He wrote 17 Oz books 18 if you count "The Royal Book of Oz," but you shouldn't, because it was written by Ruth Plumly Thompson in all, and they're marvelously weird, violent, and enchanting. Baum styled himself as "Royal Historian of Oz," trying to maintain the illusion Oz was a real place, and that he received the stories by telegraph by Dorothy and Princess Ozma themselves.

We bought this book for my 8 year old son who is addicted to anything Oz. He has read it at least 5 or 6 times! Once he saw the movie, he had to have the book.
