When I wrote Stubborn Archivist , I was hungry for writing that showed bilingual lives — speaking, loving, hurting, bringing up children, but with your languages mixed up. My kids love them and want to read them over and over.

Reading is helpful for learning any language. Our amazing Lingvist Community, back when we had a forum, put together these amazing resources for reading in a foreign language. Parallel Text - A collection of books and their translations. The interface is nice, allowing either split-screen mode or clicking to translate entire paragraphs, and phrases can be clicked to be read aloud. Interlinear Books - This company specializes in direct translations underneath the text.

The bilingual books below are great for learning Spanish side-by-side without having to consult a dictionary. FluentU takes real-world videos, like music videos, commercials, news and inspiring talks, and turns them into Spanish learning experiences. Other sites use scripted content. Bilingual picture books offer children the opportunity to develop a second language and expand their cultural awareness. Some bilingual books provide side-by-side text in English as well as Spanish; others simply pepper in Spanish words and phrases. For those side-by-side texts, I recommend starting with one language and sticking with it throughout the entire book. Then, read the book again but in the other language. If your child is fluent in both languages, you can try reading both languages side by side and comparing the translations.
