Pity that they often gloss over a film that seemed to do pretty well in the summer of then again, the media tends to focus on how much money you make, not the integrity of your character. There was a feel of rude-n-crude humor to Stitch, but what managed to keep the film from falling into just being mediocre, was the story of Lilo Daveigh Chase , a little girl whose imagination makes it hard for her to fit in, as well as get along well with her older sister, Nani Tia Carrere. Straight lines in the production were largely done away with, and almost everything was given an expanded or rounded look to it which definitely contrasted with the very angular designs of Atlantis as well. The idea behind the production of the film, was making something on a smaller budget, but still retaining the heart of the piece. For inspiration, the filmmakers would often look to Dumbo , which was a simple little story that was also made on a much smaller budget than other films the studio had produced at the time.
Shortly after being hatched, the Ugly Ducking unknowingly causes an argument between the mother and father duck who can't understand how such an abnormal baby could be born to them; especially since their other young were all perfect little ducklings. When the duck parents go their separate ways, the Ugly Duckling oblivious to how she intentionally left him behind decides to follow his mother and siblings to the pond and swims after them. When it doesn't scold him or try to drive him off, he interprets its silence as acceptance and adopts it as his new mother. Unfortunately, while playing on and around his new "parent," the Ugly Duckling causes it to tip over and knock him on the head with its bill. Deciding that he was just too ugly for anyone to love; the Ugly Duckling gives up hope of ever finding a family to accept him and breaks down in tears. As his sobs become louder and more despondent, the Ugly Duckling is approached by a group of cygnets who to his surprise not only look and sound like him but actually seem happy to see him.
