Rate this book. A tender new novel about music, celebrity, local intrigue, and lost love - all set by the Mediterranean Sea. Aside from his trusty piano, Alfred Busi lives alone in his villa overlooking the waves. Famed in his town for his music and songs, he is mourning the recent death of his wife and quietly living out his days, occasionally performing the classics in small venues - never in the stadiums he could fill when in his prime. On the night before receiving his town's highest honor, Busi is wrested from bed by noises in his courtyard and then stunned by an attacking intruder - his hands and neck are scratched, his face is bitten.

Mercury and Me

In the introduction to the anthology Crime Novels: American Noir of the s , it is described as "one of the most blistering and uncompromising crime novels ever written. The story is told through the eyes of its protagonist, Lou Ford, a year-old deputy sheriff in a small Texas town. Ford appears to be a regular, small-town cop leading an unremarkable existence; beneath this facade, however, he is a cunning, depraved sociopath with sadistic sexual tastes. Despite having a steady girlfriend, childhood friend and schoolteacher Amy Stanton, Ford falls into a passionate, sadomasochistic relationship with a prostitute named Joyce Lakeland. Ford describes their affair as unlocking "the sickness" that has plagued him since adolescence, when he sexually abused a little girl, a crime for which his elder foster brother Mike took the blame to spare Lou from prison. After serving a jail term, Mike died at a construction site. Lou blamed a local construction magnate, Chester Conway, for Mike's death, suspecting he was murdered for refusing to break the law to enable Conway's schemes.

About menu

The following day, after dinner, Jim leaves the Cuzaks. In Black Hawk the next day, Jim is disappointed by the unfamiliar town, and is hard-pressed to occupy himself until the night express train arrives. Toward evening, Jim walks out beyond the outskirts of town and finds himself at home again. In his wanderings, he comes upon the first bit of the old road that leads out to the country farms. Although the track has largely been plowed under, Jim easily recognizes the way.

We know that Yorick was a fellow of infinite jest. But what exactly was his boffo material? Did he slay them with borscht-belt one-liners, or did he stick to observational humor — Seinfeld-like riffs on the miseries of Danish weather? Alas, we cannot know. But it seems fairly certain that even melancholy Danes prized a choice punch line, like the Romans and the Greeks before them.
