Topsy and Tim is a series of children's books written by Jean Adamson and Gareth Adamson about twins and their adventures. They were first published in and were relaunched in new editions in February Since more than Topsy and Tim titles have been published with sales of more than 21 million. In an interview with The Guardian , [2] Jean Adamson said that she and her future husband had been trained as book illustrators at Goldsmiths College. They decided to get married and quit their jobs in order to write and illustrate their own children's books. Their approach was shaped by a visit to a children's bookshop in Newcastle where they realised that there were few books depicting actual contemporary children. She explained that the books were also influenced by the post-war mood:.

Their exploits have spawned more than books selling more than 21 million copies worldwide and provided bedtime stories for today's children and their parents before them. Now the twins are set for a new adventure as the BBC brings them to television for the first time. For author and illustrator Jean Adamson, 84, who created the much-loved stories with her late husband Gareth, the transfer to the screen is a surprise and a delight. I met the children playing Topsy and Tim and they are gorgeous, very sensible and charming. The couple met while studying art and illustration at Goldsmiths College in London. After completing the course Gareth worked with an advertising agency in Northumberland while Jean taught at the college and worked for an animation company in London.

After years of spirited fantasy, puppet shows and various incarnations of pot-bellied costume characters, children's television is getting a reality check. For the first time since its launch in , CBeebies has decided to air its first live dramas. The very first to be shown was Katy Morag, which premiered last Sunday. Based on the hugely popular series of books by Mairi Hedderwick first published in the s, the programme depicts the adventures of a fiery-haired girl and her family on the fictional Scottish island of Struay. The show is already causing a particular stir in Scotland, but it is the second, which airs on Monday, that looks set to resonate most across the generations.
