Angus & Julia Stone – A Book Like This
Growing up on the northern beaches of Sydney, the Stone siblings were schooled in pop music at an early age by their father, who played in a local cover band. In , Julia Stone began teaching trumpet lessons while her brother Angus worked as a laborer. She convinced him to test his musical talents by performing locally, and he responded by bringing her on-stage with him as a backing musician. At first, the two played separately billed shows, but each would support the other on-stage to the point where it made sense to share billing credits. Impressed with the Stones' material, as well as their growing buzz in both Australia and England, Healy invited them to his house to use his piano. Two years later the group returned with Down the Way, which introduced a bigger, bolder sound.
This debut release from Aussie siblings Angus and Julia Stone barely rises above strummed acoustic guitars and stripped down drums, but after a few listens it's clutch of gentle melodies have nestled their way inside my head as a summery delight come a few months early. Let's hope the actual weather follows suit soon. They were raised just north of Sydney in a musical family, and started making music in that environment more as a personal hobby than a way of earning a living. A couple of years ago they naturally gravitated to performing together, and not long after that relocated to the UK. A couple of EPs later and they've now got a full length release to their name. They have been semi-adopted by none other than Fran Healy from Travis, who co-produces here and gave his home studio over to them for half the album - the rest being recorded in their mum's lounge.
A Book Like This takes strength from its two young songwriters, both of whom approach love and coming-of-age issues from their own gendered perspective.
