Book Review - Noughts and Crosses Sequence

A dystopian Romeo and Juliet that makes eloquent statements about race relations and the burning passions of the teenage heart, Noughts and Crosses is absolutely pivotal in the evolution of the Young Adult novel. Sephy is a Cross: she lives a life of privilege and power. But she's lonely, and burns with injustice at the world she sees around her.

Published on: 20 May Author: Emily Drabble. What to Read After is here to help you out The series is set in an alternative timeline in which Africans made Europeans their slaves; slavery has been abolished, but the Crosses are very much in control. Now it's hard to imagine the YA landscape without the epic love story of Sephy and Callum, Malorie's star-crossed lovers - her very own Romeo and Juliet.

It was one of the few books about black people, so I felt seen. Years have passed since the love between Sephy - a Cross - and Callum - a Nought - destroyed their world and changed their families and society forever. Society appears to be very different now. Race and class don't divide people anymore. But things are never really that easy.

Noughts and Crosses Press Reviews

Each of us has the power to give life meaning, to make out time and our bodies and our words into instruments of love and hope. Sephy is a Cross — a member of the dark-skinned ruling class. The two have been friends since early childhood. Until the first steps are taken towards more social equality and a limited number of Noughts are allowed into Cross schools… Against a background of prejudice and distrust, intensely highlighted by violent terrorist activity by Noughts, a romance builds between Sephy and Callum — a romance that is to lead both of them into terrible danger…. I cried at the end of Noughts and Crosses! Keep writing forever!

The series describes an alternative history in which African people had gained a technological and organisational advantage over the European people , rather than the other way around, with Africans having made Europeans their slaves.
