Lovesong by Abi Morgan
Books by Abi Morgan
Again and again, Morgan constructs her narratives around losses and absences, hollow centres and negative spaces. In Splendour , the earliest work published here, the absence at the heart of the play is immediately apparent. Oolio — military leader, tyrant and husband — is a black hole in the heart of the drama, a centre of gravity that draws these four different women together. The next play, Tiny Dynamite , is also haunted by a character we never see: the girl who was loved and lost by Lucien and Anthony, and who still binds them together, even though their lives have sharply diverged since childhood. In Tender , the half-dozen characters whose lives brush past each other in chance encounters include one of the disappeared — Marvin, who has left his marriage with Gloria to live in hostels, scratching out a living as a domestic cleaner.

Morgan was born in Cardiff , Wales. After initial ambitions to become an actress herself, she decided to become a writer while reading drama and literature at Exeter University. Having not dared to show any of her writing "to anyone for five years", her first professional stage credit was in with Skinned at the Nuffield Theatre , Southampton. She was commissioned to write the single drama Sex Traffic for Channel 4 in , about a teenage girl trafficked from the Balkans to Britain. The Mistress Contract by Abi Morgan at the Royal Court Theatre
Abi Morgan wrote her first play about a woman eating an entire iceberg lettuce. Her latest television series is partly inspired by her tendency to argue out loud with herself while walking the dog, or riding the Tube. Her path to success, taking in a drama and literature degree at Exeter University, has always been less than conventional. Morgan, 47, is both prolific and extraordinarily versatile. Her new film Suffragette also featuring Streep, as Emmeline Pankhurst opened last week and River , her six-part detective series exploring the subject of mental health, begins on Tuesday. Morgan has never been afraid to tackle big subjects. She made her mark in with the meticulously researched and Bafta-winning Channel 4 drama Sex Traffic , about the fate of two Moldovan sisters unwittingly sold into prostitution.
