School is difficult for the only child of an out-of-work architect and nurse who have been forced to downsize and leave their much-loved home. When Georges moves to a new apartment building, he meets a cast of eccentric neighbours who set in motion a mystery that is the backdrop to sharp observational comedy from Rebecca Stead. Georges has been cast aside by his best friend and is putting up with some dismal intimidation at school "classic bully crap," he realises. Kids call him Gorgeous, prompting the aside: "there are worst things to be called, even for a boy". The school scenes are adroitly done.
