dobraemerytura.org: Lyr Req: Bell, Book and Candle (Boo Hewerdine)

The original comedy, about modern-day sorcerers, is being staged by the Arena Players Repertory Company in East Farmingdale. The plot concerns Gillian Holroyd, a young, sultry witch who is interested in pursuing a dalliance with her upstairs neighbor, Shepherd Henderson. Witches supposedly cannot fall in love, but they can excel at pleasures of the flesh, and toward this end Gillian casts a spell on the unsuspecting Henderson on Christmas Eve when he comes downstairs to use her telephone. Henderson's gaily wrapped gifts to friends and family are forgotten as Gillian's black arts weave their spell around his heart. He is totally bewitched, and falls deeply in love.

Below are both the Steve Allen and Dan Ferris lyrics. As for the music, a Latin rhythm of some kind seemed appropriate and the band worked up an Afro-Cuban sound that works extremely well. Originally, we opened the song with me humming the melody line, in the same way Gillian Holroyd Kim Novak had done in the movie while casting a spell. Although it was a great fit on paper, on the actual recording the intro dragged, so I chose to edit it out, opening instead with the main melody played by all the instruments—a stronger choice. It matches the pace of the film, which becomes less frenetic—more down to earth—once Gillian has lost her magical powers. Your mystic charms destroyed my world Just like a Vandal. Then a tear comes to your eye And your powers are suddenly dry.

The blue around the moring noon The colour of your eyes I remember holding you Fall through summer skies You're everything that I've become, every word I say I need a bell, book and candle to keep your ghost away White horses on a troubled sea Your smile will flash through time Up ahead a blackbird's wing Your hair will come to mind Every night I see your face when I have to pray I need a bell, book and candle to keep your ghost away Keep your ghost away, keep your ghost away I need a bell, book and candle to keep your ghost away Just before the thunder roars I sense you next to me And as I move through nature I know where you will be So I must keep myself apart, here is where I'll stay With a bell, book and candle to keep your ghost away Explain Request.

Like that band, there is something insidiously catchy about songs like the optimistic stomp of the title track and the breezy-sounding "Heyo. Slower numbers like the solemn, moving "Imagine," with its anthemic chorus, and the Celtic-tinged march "Rescue Me" work every bit as well. The lyrics are long on affairs of the heart and Gross' delivery manages to give them mileage when they become trite. AllMusic relies heavily on JavaScript.
