The Structure of the Bible

British Broadcasting Corporation Home. By John Drane Last updated The Bible is not just one book, but an entire library, with stories, songs, poetry, letters and history, as well as literature that might more obviously qualify as 'religious'. The Old Testament is the original Hebrew Bible, the sacred scriptures of the Jewish faith, written at different times between about and BC. The Hebrew Bible has 39 books, written over a long period of time, and is the literary archive of the ancient nation of Israel. It was traditionally arranged in three sections.

Outline of Bible-related topics. Different religious groups include different books in their biblical canons , in varying orders, and sometimes divide or combine books. The Jewish Tanakh sometimes called the Hebrew Bible contains 24 books divided into three parts: the five books of the Torah "teaching" ; the eight books of the Nevi'im "prophets" ; and the eleven books of Ketuvim "writings". Christian Bibles range from the 73 books of the Catholic Church canon, the 66 books of the canon of some denominations or the 80 books of the canon of other denominations of the Protestant Church , to the 81 books of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church canon. The first part of Christian Bibles is the Greek Old Testament , which contains, at minimum, the above 24 books of the Tanakh but divided into 39 books and ordered differently. The second part is the Greek New Testament , containing 27 books; the four Canonical gospels , Acts of the Apostles , 21 Epistles or letters and the Book of Revelation.

Your spiritual growth is one of the most important facets of your faith, and one of the ways you can grow in your faith is to read your Bible. Most Christian teens know there is an Old Testament and New Testament , but they are not clear as to why it is put together the way it is. Old Testament

The Qur'an calls the first five books of the Old Testament the Tawrat. In Judaism , the collection of inspired books is known as Tanakh ; scholars often use the name Hebrew Bible. Both Jews and Christians believe these texts to be holy. According to them, God inspired men to write the collection. The collection contains different texts, called "books", about God, and the people of Israel. It can be divided into several sections: the Torah , the History of Israel , the Prophets and Wisdom books. The first to have used this name in Latin : vetus testamentum was probably Tertullian in the 2nd century.
