Michelle Harrison's 10 best bad fairies

So we stretched our wings and sprinkled some fairy dust to conjure up ten enchanting fairy books by our favorite authors. Fairies, also known as faeries or fay folk, are mythical beings that appear throughout ancient folklore and modern fantasy narratives. The following fairy books span sweeping fantasy epics rooted in the myths of the British Isles to a charmed fairy saga set in modern-day Appalachia. She dreams of escaping her confines and entering the dark and enchanted land beyond the castle walls—where she will seek out her true identity and fulfill her destiny. In this fairy book for juvenile readers, Newbery Honor author Janet Taylor Lisle Afternoon of the Elves introduces you to young Angela and a world where fairies and magic are real. Angela dreams of a box of chocolates that will never empty.

That was before they burst upon my life as vibrant, luminous beings, permeating my art and my everyday existence, causing glorious havoc In this richly imagined new book, Brian reveals the secrets he has learned from the faeries -- what their noses and shoes look like, what mischief and what gentle assistance they can give, what their souls and their dreams are like. As it turns out, faeries aren't all sweetness and light. In addition to such good faeries as Dream Weavers and Faery Godmothers, Brian introduces us to a host of less well behaved creatures -- traditional bad faeries like Morgana le Fay, but also the Soul Shrinker and the Gloominous Doom. The faery kingdom, we find, is as subject to good and evil as the human realm.

Michelle Harrison won the Waterstone's children's books prize in with her debut novel, The Thirteen Treasures, a Grimm-style story of a girl who can see fairies. It was of a fairy who had been killed by a wicked witch and buried in our garden. The lack of a happy ending led me to wonder if it was true and, morbid child that I was, I dug in the flowerbeds in search of that fairy. After that I quickly became familiar with the usual tales of good fairies granting wishes and collecting teeth, and gradually lost interest, preferring stories of adventure, mystery, and ghosts. It completely changed the way I viewed fairies and prompted me to research deeper into British folklore. There I found stories of fairies that were deceitful, malicious — even deadly.

A fairy also fata , fay , fey , [1] fae , fair folk ; from faery , faerie , "realm of the fays " is a type of mythical being or legendary creature in European folklore and particularly Celtic , Slavic , German , English , and French folklore , a form of spirit , often described as metaphysical , supernatural , or preternatural. Myths and stories about fairies do not have a single origin, but are rather a collection of folk beliefs from disparate sources. Various folk theories about the origins of fairies include casting them as either demoted angels or demons in a Christian tradition, as minor deities in pre-Christian Pagan belief systems, as spirits of the dead, as prehistoric precursors to humans , or as elementals.
