The Bookstore also offers the option to rent textbooks for a significantly lower price than buying them, as well as many etextbooks, which can be rented or purchased. Submit your book orders online here. Textbook Rental is simple! Now at your campus bookstore, you can rent the textbooks you need for the semester, then return them at the end of the term. Most forms of payment currently accepted at the bookstore can also be used for rentals. We do require a credit card be kept on file, even if you pay with a different method. If the textbook is returned after the due date, or is damaged, we use the credit card on file to pay for a replacement book and processing fee, as described in your Rental Agreement.

The online giant has the best selection of textbooks to rent online and combines that selection with Prime two-day shipping for excellent service. If a rental is available, the option will pop up next to the price and you can choose to rent the book. One great thing about renting eTextbooks from Amazon is the ability to choose your own end date for your electronic versions. This way you can only pay for the time you need the book. If you want to have access to the book forever, Amazon gives you the option to purchase a permanent electronic version. College students can qualify for six months of free Prime Student and get two-day delivery if they sign up. That being said, not having to deal with a full box for just a single book was also refreshing.

Rent-A-Text is a low-cost option for acquiring your course materials. You can pay for your rental books the same way you would if you were purchasing new or used books, using a credit card, debit card, check, cash or with your financial aid. You can rent books at any Ivy Tech bookstore or online. Do not rent your textbook if you believe there is a risk you may not return the book on time. These additional charges will be posted to the debit or credit card you used for collateral when you signed up to rent. If these additional fees for non-return exceed your credit limit or debit card's account available balance, you will likely also be charged a fee or penalty by your credit card or debit card company in addition to the charges from the Ivy Tech bookstore for a non-return texbook rental. Convert your rental to a purchase if you wish to keep it or, you may do so after the bookstore refund deadline but before the rental return due date by paying the difference between rental cost and the book cost based on condition new or used.

We need to do better in making course materials available to cash-strapped undergraduates and letting them interact with the texts and ideas, Sheila Liming argues. Advertisements of this kind materialize in my email inbox at the start of every semester. They are as much a part of the general back-to-school routine as activities fairs and rush week. Renting is by far the predominant means of acquiring books on my campus, which I originally mistook for a sign of good, old-fashioned Midwestern frugality. But in talking with my students, I have since learned that there is much more to the story where renting is concerned. And besides, they explained, the campus bookstore only stocks rental copies. Today, most American college students arrive on campus or else online with a haunting awareness of what their education is costing them.
