I need advice on reducing the price as much as I can without reducing fun so we can have enough of it to bring my friends back again. This will be everyone's first time, and I have no idea about which edition to play. I don't want to play one that's not as much fun for beginners just because the rulebook is cheaper. Once we have an established thing going and it's regular, I will be more than willing to purchase the fancy books with art and everything.

How to Play Dungeons & Dragons

Starting Strong at your First Dungeons & Dragons Game

Over the years, as the game developed, new methods were introduced to help streamline the process by which a band of merry adventurers might stumble upon some of these monsters. Instead of succumbing to the wills of the DM, a Challenge System was introduced in the game's third edition to help balance out the various encounters. This new system ensured a group of level one adventurers wouldn't stumble upon a monster they couldn't handle while continuing to throw the various chaff their way, which helped to build up levels in the early stages of gameplay. No longer would an annoying player have to face off against a Red Dragon if the DM became annoyed, and that was a good thing Over the decades the game has been around, the changes to the Challenge System have led to more and more monsters being introduced. Instead of simply sticking to familiar characters from mythology, many different types have discovered adventurers lurking about their dungeons. When a powerful spellcaster decides to avoid death, they employ necromancy to become immortal.

At worst, vets can point new DMs to these articles when new DMs seek advice for running great games. Lost Mine of Phandelver is my favorite published adventure for this very reason. Building a cohesive adventure for your group on top of all of the other duties required of us DMs can overwhelm even the most organized new dungeon masters. If you do choose to run your own adventure, keep it simple. Focus your attention on the characters and what is right around them instead of building a huge epic storyline.
