Steiner George. After Babel. Aspects of Language and Translation [PDF] - Все для студента

For many years Steiner, now at the University of Geneva, taught at Cambridge, where science has always played an important role. It was there that I. Richards and others modernized English Studies by emphasizing the vital and intrinsic link between language, psychology and thought, and C. The study of language, as Steiner knows, is a test case for the interaction of the two cultures: it is the only brandi of humanistic learning in which the scientific method seems to have made real headway in the form of structural linguistics, transformational grammar and semiotics. Yet one of the questions raised by Steiner is whether contemporary linguistic science is genuinely humane or potentially dehumanizing. Come, let us go down, and there confuse their language, that they may not understand one another's speech.

Discussed by Christopher Norris The critical reception of After Babel, since its publication more than a year ago, provides another chapter in the history of closedshop academic attitudes which Steiner sets out to challenge. The book has received remarkably little attention from the linguists, philosophers and cultural historians—the community, in short, of which Steiner himself is part and whose concerns he also deeply questions. One reason for this lack of attention is doubtless the academic narrowness which regards such mixing of disciplines as a kind of professional affront. Another is probably the feeling induced by Steiner's immoderate show of learning, the feeling that one man could not possibly have read so much, or could only have covered it by hunting selectively through footnotes and abstracts. Certainly Steiner is a great seeker-out of handy information, sometimes thrown off with a point-making neatness which omits a large background of argument.

I had the greatest pleasure reading this book and I think anybody who is into linguistics, translation and literary theory will respect the authors breadth of knowledge as well as his clear style.

Post a Comment. Quotation from " After Babel: Aspects of language and translation 3rd Edition ". Steiner's concept of translation is more comprehensive, as far as I know, than any other's. He sees translation not just in communication across different languages but also in communication in general. Behind this idea is his emphasis on intricacy and complexity of speech even in a 'monolingual' situation. Any model of communication is at the same time a model of trans-lation [sic], of a vertical or horizontal transfer of significance.
