P. J. Gullan, Peter Cranston, "The Insects: An Outline of Entomology" - Free eBooks Download

We have come to appreciate some differences which may be evident in this edition. We have retained the regional balance of case studies for an international audience. With globalization has come unwanted, perhaps unforeseen, consequences, including the potential worldwide dissemination of pest insects and plants. A modern entomologist must be aware of the global status of pest control efforts. These range from insect pests of specific origin, such as many vectors of disease of humans, animals, and plants, to noxious plants, for which insect natural enemies need to be sought. The quarantine entomologist must know, or have access to, global databases of pests of commerce.

The Insects: An Outline of Entomology, 5th Edition

You are currently using the site but have requested a page in the site. Would you like to change to the site? Gullan , P. This popular textbook provides a comprehensive introduction to this extraordinary diversity, and places entomology central to the theory and practice of evolutionary and ecological studies. Fully revised, this fifth edition opens with a chapter concerning the popular side of insect studies, including insects in citizen science, zoos and butterfly houses, and insects as food for humans and animals. Key features of insect structure, function, behaviour, ecology and classification are integrated with appropriate molecular studies. A strong evolutionary theme is maintained throughout.

Jennifer M. Insects are the most successful group of animals on Earth. They are critical components of nearly all ecosystems, and provide essential services to the environment. Despite the abundance, diversity, and importance of insects, relatively few introductory entomology textbooks are available, particularly those that can accommodate courses with both laboratory sections and specimen collection requirements. Earlier versions of this hardcover textbook, dedicated to the study of insects, have been my text of choice for teaching entomology courses for the last five years, and the newest edition provides significant updates and an entirely new chapter. One of my favorite aspects of this book is its versatility
