Crystallography and Crystal Defects - PDF Free Download

Reinforcing its unrivalled position as the core text for teaching crystallography and crystal defects, each chapter includes problem sets with brief numerical solutions at the end of the book. Upper-division undergraduates and above. Extensively revised and updated, this new edition of a classic text presents a unified approach to crystallography and to the defects found within crystals. The book combines the classical and exact description of symmetry of a perfect crystal with the possible geometries of the major defects-dislocations, stacking faults, point defects, twins, interfaces and the effects of martensitic transformations. A number of important concepts and exciting new topics have been introduced in this second edition, including piezoelectricity, liquid crystals, nanocrystalline concepts, incommensurate materials and the structure of foamed and amorphous solids.

Physics Dept. In addition, the microstructural properties, crystal imperfections and the morphology of these samples were studied. XRD analysis revealed that these samples have a polycrystalline hexagonal wurtzite structure and nanometric dimensions. XRD-line profile analysis was used to study the microstructure and crystal defects of these nanoparticles. Crystallite size and microstrain were estimated using the Williamson—Hall method.

Since the first edition of this book, understanding of crystal defects such as dislocations, stacking faults, twin, grain and interphase boundaries and their effect on the mechanical and electrical properties of materials has grown enormously, and this has been accompanied by a total change in style of the way in which both research and teaching are carried out through the use of the fast digital computer. This new edition takes account of this change and a number of new topics are included, for example piezoelectricity, liquid crystals, nanocrystalline concepts, incommensurate materials and the structure of foamed and amorphous materials. The topic of quasicrystalline materials has been completely rewritten, and the data tables and references have been fully updated. Reinforcing its unrivalled position as the core text for teaching crystallography and crystal defects, each chapter includes problem sets with brief numerical solutions at the end of the book. Detailed worked solutions, supplementary lecture material and computer programs for crystallographic calculations are provided online. InTech, , pages, ISBN: This book is a collection of works showcasing some of the most recent developments in the field of crystallography. The advent of X-ray diffraction in the early twentieth century transformed crystallography from an area of scientific inquiry largely limited to physics, mineralogy, and mathematics, to a highly

Description

Crystallography is the experimental science of determining the arrangement of atoms in crystalline solids see crystal structure. The word "crystallography" is derived from the Greek words crystallon "cold drop, frozen drop", with its meaning extending to all solids with some degree of transparency, and graphein "to write". In July , the United Nations recognised the importance of the science of crystallography by proclaiming that would be the International Year of Crystallography. Before the development of X-ray diffraction crystallography see below , the study of crystals was based on physical measurements of their geometry. This involved measuring the angles of crystal faces relative to each other and to theoretical reference axes crystallographic axes , and establishing the symmetry of the crystal in question. This physical measurement is carried out using a goniometer.
