borreguita and the coyote pdf | Borreguita and the Coyote: A Tale from Ayutla, Mexico

Verna Norberg was born in New Era, Michigan. She graduated from Michigan State University with a B. She worked as a grade school teacher from to and became a correspondent for the Muskegon Chronicle in , a job that lasted until , the year before she retired from teaching. In her senior year at Michigan State, Norberg won three writing contests; although not her first, they were the most influential in her decision to pursue the childhood dream. She first considered writing for children when her daughter refused to eat until she'd heard one of her mother's stories. These bribes were often set in the places that she had been reading about recently, and as she became more and more interested in Africa, they began to be set there more frequently. In , she published her first set of stories, Tales from the Story Hat which were very successful, and so she continued to adapt traditional tales and folklore from distant cultures, usually from Africa and Mexico to expose young children to the vast variety of human expression.

The Village School provides a warm, safe, supportive, nurturing garden for children to grow and become themselves. Teachers are facilitators, gardeners and role models. Children are learning friendship making, fine and large motor skills, beginning reading and handwriting, hands-on math with manipulatives, and growing imagination and creativity through play, all rooted in daily experience in nature. Wonder is alive and thriving. Children begin to solidify skills and move freely between the world of imagination and the real world around them. Learning sparks their interest, and their interest guides the direction and depth of their learning.

Tell the class that you are about to share a book set in Mexico. Locate Mexico on a map. From the cover, can the children infer anything about the climate or terrain of Mexico? What do they notice about the colors the artist used on the cover? Have children study the cover of the book to see if they can discover any clues telling what the book is about. Record the children's guesses on a chalkboard or on a chart pad. Compare the children's storyline predictions with the actual story.
