Roald Dahl is known for clever, unsettling and highly entertaining short stories. Many have a surprise ending, but whether they do or not his stories are engaging from beginning to end. Even the longest ones are well worth the time it takes to read them. An old man thinks he hears a noise. He comes outside and listens. He hears the high-pitched yelp of a dog coming from the shed of his neighbor, Judson. Peter Williamson, an injured WWII pilot, bails out of his plane and wakes up in a Brighton hospital, but he notices some unusual things.

But he made me aware that the narrator, whether third person or first, is not a neutral figure but an active, even directive, force. This suggests something, I think, about why his work for children lingers: a whisper of nostalgia, a bit of history, personal or otherwise. Still, as Dahl also understands, nostalgia only goes so far, for childhood is a passing phase. And yet these stories remain largely overlooked. Writing for adults is not what we think about when we think about Dahl—it does not fit our caricature of him. His adult writing roughs out the smoothness of his edges.
