World Latitude and Longitude Map, World Lat Long Map

Latitude is a measurement on a globe or map of location north or south of the Equator. Technically, there are different kinds of latitude— geocentric, astronomical, and geographic or geodetic —but there are only minor differences between them. In most common references, geocentric latitude is implied. As aids to indicate different latitudinal positions on maps or globes, equidistant circles are plotted and drawn parallel to the Equator and each other; they are known as parallels , or parallels of latitude. In contrast, geographic latitude, which is the kind used in mapping, is calculated using a slightly different process. Different methods are used to determine geographic latitude, as by taking angle-sights on certain polar stars or by measuring with a sextant the angle of the noon Sun above the horizon. Geographic latitude is also given in degrees, minutes, and seconds.

How to find Latitude and Longitude

Save to My Library. Discuss with students what they already know about maps. Divide students into pairs. Give each pair an outline map of the world and an outline map of the United States. Have students circle familiar characteristics and underline or list unfamiliar characteristics. Have a whole-class discussion about what they already know or notice about the maps. Students may recognize the shapes of countries, they may point out their state or region, or they may identify familiar bodies of water.

Two imaginary sets of lines-the longitudes and latitudes- drawn around the world to make a grid, give us the geographical co-ordinates of any place. We can find out how far north, east, west and south that place is on Earth by referring to these co-ordinates. This map displays the geographical coordinates- the latitude and the longitude-of the world. It also displays the countries along with the latitudes and longitudes. The map is a useful resource for school children and a helpful aid for parents and teachers.
