Gods, Demons, and Others Summary & Study Guide

Written by R. Narayan, who is regarded as one of India's greatest English language novelists, Gods, Demons and Others is a collection of some of the most well-known stories of Hindu mythology. They are taken, in part, from the ancient texts of 'The Ramayana', an epic hero's tale starring Rama, which is known in one form or another by every man, woman and child in the Indian society, and 'The Mahabharata', which is the other major epic tale of the culture, starring two rival families and chronicling their struggles. The source of 'Lavana' and 'Chudala' is the 'Yoga-Vasishta'. Narayan included only stories that revolved around outstanding personalities, and he aimed at assembling as large a variety of characters as possible. It was his hope that taken together, they would provide the reader with a total picture of Indian mythology. These stories, as written within this text, are not meant to be taken as translations.

Gods, Demons and Others is a collection of short stories by R. The selection of stories includes only those that center on outstanding personalities who transcend the boundaries of time and age. The book consists of 15 stories. The story of Lavana , an asura from the Ramayana. The story of Yayati , an asura king.

In the tales of some of the more famous characters, such as the Pandavas and Rama and Sita, you get a sense of great and terrible events rushing by, but always the focus is on the characters themselves, and not the plot--although Narayan gives enough detail to make you understand it. The hardcover book is a perfect weekend read. Now with a new foreword by Wendy Doniger, as well as a concise character and place guide and a family tree, The Mahabharata is ready for a new generation of readers. One could hardly hope for more. Following in the footsteps of the storytellers of his native India, R. Alongside each adaptation, Mitchell includes his own commentary, at once explicating and complementing the text. Carefully selecting those stories which include the strongest characters, and omitting the theological or social commentary that would have drawn out the telling, Narayan informs these fascinating myths with his urbane humor and graceful style.
