Our English Literature degree will enable you to examine in greater detail authors and genres that you may already know from tragedy to Gothic, from Shakespeare and Dickens to Plath and Beckett. Our academics have published research on everything from medieval poetry to contemporary Caribbean and American fiction, and they will help you to develop your own literary enthusiasms. Our first year core modules ensure that all of our students have the advanced skills in literary analysis necessary for undergraduate work. We explore the different ways that literary texts respond to their cultural context Genre and Context ; we trace the development of poetry in English over time and across the globe Poetry in English ; we examine how literary texts accrue new meanings in the process of interpretation Research and Criticism. You can take additional modules in other subjects in your first year, but you also have the option to study creative writing; non-fiction persuasive writing, or twentieth-century American literature. In the second year, you choose modules that range from Renaissance lyric poetry to contemporary fiction. In the third year, your module choices are more diverse and specialised: you can do archive work on Studying Manuscripts, or look at the politics of literature in Writing Global Justice.

If you have a passion for literature, we have a challenging course that will inspire you in your reading, and develop your critical and imaginative abilities. When established, the Cambridge course was considered daringly innovative and this ethos continues to shape teaching and research. You are taught by some of the most eminent writers and thinkers who, between them, teach and research almost every aspect of literature. We have no set approach beyond instilling the valuable skills of critical thinking, scholarly rigour and good writing. Our modern Faculty building also includes a drama studio and garden. Socially, many English students pursue interests in creative writing, journalism and the performing arts.

Course Overview

This degree combines elements from our English Language and English Literature degrees in roughly equal proportions, allowing you to immerse yourself in both subjects. Opportunities You will enjoy wide-ranging literature options including pre-twentieth-century literature up to the present day. For example, Renaissance literature, the Romantics, American modernism, and postwar culture. In linguistics you learn about the history of English and the social contexts in which it is used, as well as scientific methodologies for studying it. You study at least one third of your topics in each discipline at each Stage. This gives you the freedom to choose the remaining third from a wide selection of language or literature modules, or topics outside the School. In Stage 3, you have the chance to gain valuable work-related experience by undertaking a work placement in one of the cultural industries.
