Time, Temporality, Now pp Cite as. Like Locke and Hume, Whitehead accepts that the stream of thought has temporal extension. Perception, however, does not take place in a nontemporal moment; it rather takes time. It is a prerequisite of perception in the specious present that not only the reality of the percipient event but also of the perceived event is temporally extended. The problem of how distinctions in the stream of events appear and why the apparent world does not collapse in one moment disappears when we observe that the present itself is duration, and therefore includes directly perceived time-relations between events contained within reality.
