Bioshock, Breaking the Mold : Developer's Edition Art Book
The series is considered a spiritual successor to the System Shock series, on which many of Irrational's team including Levine had worked previously. As with System Shock , the BioShock games combine first-person shooter FPS and computer role-playing games RPG elements, giving the player freedom for how to approach combat and other situations, and considered part of the immersive sim genre. Additionally, the series is notable for exploring philosophical and moral concepts with a strong in-game narrative influenced by concepts such as objectivism and American exceptionalism. The series consists of three main games. BioShock and BioShock 2 were released in and , respectively, and take place in and again, respectively in the fictional underwater city of Rapture. BioShock Infinite , released in , is thematically and narratively tied to the first games, but takes place in aboard the floating city of Columbia. Work on Infinite led Levine to drastically downsize and rebrand Irrational Games into Ghost Story Games to work on smaller titles, while 2K Games remained interested in the property.
