Written by Russian novelist Leo Tolstoy , the eight-part towering work of fiction tells the story of two major characters: a tragic, disenchanted housewife, the titular Anna, who runs off with her young lover, and a lovestruck landowner named Konstantin Levin, who struggles in faith and philosophy. Tolstoy molds together thoughtful discussions on love, pain, and family in Russian society with a sizable cast of characters regarded for their realistic humanity. The novel was especially revolutionary in its treatment of women, depicting prejudices and social hardships of the time with vivid emotion. Harper Lee , believed to be one of the most influential authors to have ever existed, famously published only a single novel up until its controversial sequel was published in just before her death. Its iconic characters, most notably the sympathetic and just lawyer and father Atticus Finch, served as role models and changed perspectives in the United States at a time when tensions regarding race were high. To Kill a Mockingbird earned the Pulitzer Prize for fiction in and was made into an Academy Award-winning film in , giving the story and its characters further life and influence over the American social sphere.

10 Amazing Books You Must Read Before You Die

The 10 best books of 2019 so far, according to Amazon

Wed 5 Jun Read the full review. What we said: The novel works brilliantly as a twisty page-turner, but it is far deeper and more nuanced than that. What we said: A helix, a mirrorball, a literary box of tricks … take your pick: this is a full-spectrum pleasure, mixing metafictional razzmatazz with pulse-racing action and a prose style to die for. Years after leaving her poisonous and privileged family behind, a woman and her husband are forced to meet with her Trump-esque father and socialite mother. Horror ensues. What we said: The Snakes asks serious questions about human nature, avarice and justice, wrapped in the fast-paced rhythms of a thriller.

My favorite reads from last year were the bestselling Illuminae series, which Kaufman and Kristoff cowrote. An SF YA with an ensemble cast of misfits, blistering sarcasm, and characters who are really good at what they do but terrible when interacting with other people? Sign me up, please! The latest entry is a spin-off, introducing a new protagonist, magic-practicing cop Tobias Winter, in a new setting: Germany. What is a beach read exactly? This one hits all the marks with two women, one a reluctant fourth-generation commitment-phobic faux psychic, the other a brash single mother with a very mysteriously sick child. Her half-Mexican son, Alex, is obsessed with Henry, Prince of Wales, whom he thinks a tiresome bore—until Henry gets tired of dropping hints and kisses him.
