31 Days, 31 Lists: Day Nineteen – Early Chapter Books of 2017
If one gently guides kids on the path towards self-sufficient reading, the other certainly drills home how capable child readers have become. Some of these books are better suited to bedtime reading. Some are just a hair above easy books. Still others are very close to full-on novels. Is the spice of life, no? Oh, and I hope you like it when I yell at publishers because in spite of the fact that this is a list of praise, some publishers featured here need to step up their game a notch. Nicholas Hubesch, translated by Antony Shugaar.
These 20 early chapter books are great choices for boys, though any young reader, boy or girl, is sure to love the humor, adventure, and heart in these fantastic stories. Hank is an endearing protagonist, always making his classmates and his readers laugh with his funny antics and adventures. His struggles with math, and reading, and spelling, and, well, school in general are relatable, and his efforts to try his best and save the day are quite admirable. George Brown wants nothing more than to be a normal, responsible year-old kid, but his efforts tend to land him in big trouble thanks to his super burps. Those magical and pesky belches promise disaster for George Brown and a whole lot of laughs for readers. Growing readers will appreciate the large text, funny illustrations, and familiar classroom setting.
Why should kids read series? I know my kids start to think of favorite characters as friends. That encourages reading because when you have a friend you want to read all about her further adventures!
