City of Bones SummaryThere, she sees a crowd of strangely behaving, but incredibly attractive teens sneak into a storeroom. She follows them, and discovers that they're demon hunters when they kill a demon in front of her, which dissolves into the floor. Back at home, her mother is acting all cryptic and over-protective, packing up their stuff to move away from New York City and into the country home of her best friend, Luke. Clary isn't pleased, and leaves the apartment to hang out with Simon. She finds him at a poetry reading, where she also runs into Jace, one of the demon hunters called Shadowhunters or Nephilim. And then she receives a scary phone call from her mother that sounds like she's being attacked. Back at the apartment, Clary finds the place deserted.

Clary and her friend Simon decide to spend a night out when Clary notices an unusual group of people. She follows them and she soon finds herself seeing a boy being murdered by three strange teenagers. She soon finds that the boy was a demon, and the other three people, Jace, Alec and Isabelle are Shadowhunters. Clary refuses to tell Simon what happened even if he realizes that something is wrong.

The novel is set in modern day New York City and has been released in several languages, including Bulgarian, Hebrew, Polish and Japanese. Clary goes to the pandemonium club with her best friend, Simon Lewis, where she sees a blue haired boy and a black haired girl sneak into a storeroom, pursued by two other boys; one armed with what appears to be a knife. She sends Simon for help and she follows the group into the storeroom, where she witnesses the blue haired "boy" being killed; whereupon he vanishes from the room, with the explanation that demons "return to their home dimensions when they die. When she returns home, her mother, Jocelyn, scolds her for staying out so late. The next day, Jocelyn announces that they are moving from New York City to the country for the summer where Jocelyn's best friend, Luke, has a house. Clary, upset by the unexpected move, confides in Simon that she knows almost nothing about her mother or her entire family.
Then the body disappears into thin air. Or was he a boy? But why would demons be interested in ordinary mundanes like Clary and her mother? And how did Clary suddenly get the Sight? The Shadowhunters would like to know…. The City of Bones is a novel I pondered reading for a long time; I was hesitant to read this book — just like I was reluctant to read The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and Gone Girl — because this book had amassed a hype that was enormous.
