Responses to James Baldwin's 'Everybody's Protest Novel' - ENC

Each week in Bookends, two writers take on questions about the world of books. James Baldwin excoriated the protest novel as a pamphlet in literary disguise, tenanted by caricatures in service to a social or political agenda. Whether the book is a protest novel, or even whether it fails as a work of literature, are questions unworthy of a groundbreaking work that continues to inspire debate 75 years after its publication. Thus, a great many people received a swift and unsparing education in the conditions in which blacks lived in ghettos all over America. Bigger Thomas is a rapist and a murderer motivated only by fear, hate and a slew of animal impulses. He is the black ape gone berserk that reigned supreme in the white racial imagination. But where does that leave his black subjects?

Everybody’s Protest Novel

So in the beginning I was a little wary of the claims he was making but as I kept reading I began to see his specific points and the references he made to the novel about the way in which Stowe uses blackness in a negative way. The points he brought up about how these characters were passable as white or how they were useful for whites. These references that he used and the way in which he talked about it helped me to better see his point of view. Baldwin is not pleased with this declaration because he believes that Mrs. Stowe is not doing this justice at all. He uses her characters as support for his disagreement: the interracial couple, which is usually seen as quite scandalous, was deemed alright in the novel because the woman was mixed and her skin was light, and her husband was, indeed, a dark man, but with the mind of a white man.

Notes of a Native Son is a non-fiction book by James Baldwin. It was his first non-fiction book, and was published in The volume collects ten of Baldwin's essays, which had previously appeared in such magazines as Harper's Magazine , Partisan Review , and The New Leader. The essays mostly tackle issues of race in America and Europe. In spite of his father wanting him to be a preacher, Baldwin said he had always been a writer at heart.

Incontestable…Baldwin notes, but then he startles by comparing the sentiment to improving mottoes that can be found on the walls of furnished rooms. In our social media parlance, we would say that Baldwin is being snarky. They put them up on their walls.

Sentimentality, the ostentatious parading of excessive and spurious emotion, is the mark of dishonesty, the inability to feel; the wet eyes of the sentimentalist betray his aversion to experience, his fear of life, his arid heart; and it is always, therefore, the signal of secret and violent inhumanity, the mask of cruelty. This is explained by the nature of Mrs. But this, let us say, was beyond Mrs. This makes material for a pamphlet but it is hardly enough for a novel; and the only question left to ask is why we are bound still within the same constriction. How is it that we are so loath to make a further journey than that made by Mrs. Stowe, to discover and reveal something a little closer to the truth?
